Consider Using Custom Car Paint Colors on Your Next Project

Paint makes a big difference in making a vehicle attractive to anyone that will see it. There are wide varieties of colors to choose from and choosing which one will depend on what you like. Whether you are changing the paint in your living room or your car, choosing from custom paint options is always recommended for a unique look. Why choose customized paint? Perhaps you are wondering why you should choose a custom paint rather than typical auto paint colors. The reason will of course depend on how you want the finished product to look on your car. Most of the people that want to apply custom paints on their vehicles are those that would like it to have a unique color in order to have something that stands out. Our barely detectable Car Paint Protection in Melbourne are the smart, easy way to keep your factory or custom paint finish looking fresh and flawless for miles.

Selecting the car paint color is not easy because there are always so many options to choose from. Although you have the option to choose the safest color available in the market like those on existing vehicles, many find it more rewarding to choose a custom shade of paint. A combination of various paints will create a more eye-catching design that will result in something truly one of a kind that fits your personality.

One of the more popular auto paint colors that a lot many custom painters use these days is candy paint because it provides a flashier look that can easily be noticed as something unique. Although it is considered as one of the hardest type of custom paints to apply, with a little practice it can be applied to perfection. Some of the popular candy colored paint shades is the organic green, candy orange, lime green, candy turquoise, apple red, and cobalt blue. You probably have seen some of these colors in your community and perhaps you are one of the many that has appreciated this unique look. The key to having success with candy color paints is to avoid buying the fake products and get good advice from experts.

Another custom paint that many are curious about is chrome paint. If you want to give your car a more hyped and noticeable look because of its shiny appearance, this may be the best choice for you. Often used on bicycles, chrome paint is now becoming a popular choice when painting cars due to demand for truly unique looks. The downside of chrome paints is the difficult and time consuming process of applying them. You essentially have to do two paint jobs in one to achieve a truly chrome looking vehicle. However, for those with the patience to do this you end up with something that will really turn heads. If you decide to tackle this just be prepared for some frustration in the learning curve.

If the candy and chrome paints don’t fit your taste perhaps a nice color changing paint (often called chameleon paint) is more your style. Most of the cars that use this kind of paint are those who love a really loud and noticeable color. This paint adds a unique and colorful design on the car that will definitely grab the attention of anyone that will see it. What makes this paint popular is that anyone can have their own version of it since it can be altered easily by changing the base colors and how it is applied. Thermo chromic and Photo Chromic pigments also create some unique color changing car paint effects that vary with changing temperature or light source.

There are more custom paint options to choose from including pear paints, metallic paints and fluorescent car paints, however the only thing that you should be concerned with is to choose the right combination that will make your car look great based on your opinion. Of course, that is all that matters in the long run!

Cars are the most popular vehicles to modify including painting. Doing so with your own personal choice may make it more popular to others and hopefully make you a happier car owner. If you decide to have your car customized for its color and its design there are more options aside from the above-mentioned custom paint colors. Choosing the right paint for your car should be done carefully and it will need a lot of thinking. Don’t rush yourself in making the decision especially if you are clueless on what the costs and effects on value are going to be. The best decision that you can do is to consult those that are knowledgeable about paints, painting, and the process in general.

Are You Over Polishing Your Car’s Paint?

I have been reading a lot of threads on my forum lately that basically start with people asking “what polish should I use?” I couldn’t help but think, how do I best avoid using a harsh best car polish all together?

I think it’s time for a completely different discussion about car polishing. What I strive to achieve is the highest level of paint perfection without altering the structure of the vehicle’s paint. Once I get there, I want to use the proper tools and techniques to keep my paint looking perfect.

When I have a car paint problem, I want to be able to fix it without removing excessive clearcoat that I need to maintain a deep-looking finish. I’m a huge advocate of spot treatment. I rarely take an abrasive polishing compound to an entire body panel, or worse, the whole car. It simply isn’t necessary.

I have the distinct feeling from reading many forum threads that people are buying step 1-2-3 products and using all of them because that’s what they feel is necessary to achieve the best results. In no way is this use of paint polish appropriate car care.

RULE 1: Do less damage than the damage that already exists.

My experience shows me that 95% of all paint issues can be resolved with a very fine polish, the right tools and the right technique. So, why is it that so many people are willing to reach for a harsh compound as the first step… when it should be the last resort?

Very fine car polishes, often called pre-wax cleaners, can be used to maintain gloss without the scouring that thins your car’s paint. The polishing (gloss enhancing) action is a combination of chemical cleaners that remove embedded dirt and a super gentle polishes that maintains the gloss. The polishing material is about the consistency of talcum powder. My two favorite products are Klasse All-In-One and P21S Paintwork Cleansing Lotion. There are many others.

RULE 2: Don’t remove more clear topcoat than necessary… you may need it some day!

In the car detailing circles we all talk about gloss, depth and clarity, but are you stopping to think about what you might be doing to each of these final finish characteristics each time you take an abrasive polish to your paint? You might be seeing more gloss, but it’s coming at the expense of depth and maybe even paint finish clarity.

Most professional car polishes are designed to be used with a rotary buffer, by an experienced technician. When you use these polishing compounds by hand or with a dual-action car polisher, you put scratches in your paint finish that will not come out by using the next polish up in the line. So, what’s the solution?

There’s no doubt that the clearcoat on the modern car finish creates the beauty of the finish. To retain the good looks, the clearcoat must remain clean and finely polished. Heavy polishing will reduce finish clarity and depth. They must be avoided.

It should be noted that a proper paint finish (primer, color and clear) is only 6-8 thousandths (6/1000) of an inch thick. Removing 1-2 thousandths of an inch of the clear finish happens in a matter of seconds with an abrasive polish.

My business partner got a 3-inch long scratch in the clearcoat of his new Lexus SC. I used a spot pad and a corrective polish to pull most of the scratch out so it would pass the 5 foot test. He said “…but I can still see a trace of the scratch close-up…” I explained that if I removed more material we risked thinning the clearcoat and creating a patch of paint that no longer matches the rest of the finish.

Sometimes, enough is enough. The real skill in auto detailing is learning how to read the paint and knowing what the final result will be when you use a product.

RULE 3: Know for a fact what tasks the products you’re using were designed to perform.

Are you using a polish designed to be used on an automotive assembly line by a technician with a 4-inch spot pad on a pneumatic polisher to remove 2400 grit sanding marks? If so, what are the equivalent pad specs, rotation speed and polish time to remove your 5000 grit equivalent swirl marks?

Are you using a refinisher’s panel blending compound originally designed to cut and blend fresh paint using a wool pad as a general purpose cutting compound? If so, can your foam cutting pad effectively generate enough heat on your DA to break down the abrasives to prevent paint scouring?

The fact is, very few abrasive polish systems were designed from the ground up to be a DA polishing system. Very few others have bothered to correctly match “general purpose” polishes with polishing pads and proper instructions to create a system.

Again, I reiterate buyer beware. All abrasive polishes have cutting particles with different characteristics. Abrasives have different size, shape and hardness. Some particles are designed to break down into smaller, finer abrasives as the polish is applied. Others are designed to cut continuously at the same rate.

CAR PAINT CARE WITHOUT ABRASIVES

Most new car finishes can be properly maintained without using abrasive (corrective) polishes. Doing so requires smart paint care, including regular washing and waxing, use of proper wash and wax tools (wash mitts, applicators, towels, etc.) and cautious parking. Finish damage avoidance is the best way to maintain a perfect finish. Nothing will swirl a paint finish faster than a bad wash mitt or drying towels.

If you park away from soccer moms and shopping carts, and wash your car using proper tools, you can keep the finish free of light surface damage for a long time. When your paint does get marred, the problem can be locally treated by hand or with a spot pad with a corrective polish.

One approach to this problem is to use “cover-up” products. Many car wax products can be layered to help cover minor surface marring. My favorite combination is Klasse All-In-One followed by P21S Carnauba Wax. Others swear by the Zaino Show Car polish system (Z-2, Z-5 and others).

I offer the following tips for proper long-term paint finish on both new and like-new cars:

Wash weekly (as possible) using a quality car wash, wash mitt and drying towels.
Deep clean paint twice a year with detailing clay.
Polish paint 3-4 times a year with a pre-wax, non-abrasive polish.
Seal paint 3-4 times a year with a quality paint sealant.
Protect your paint finish from damage by other motorists and pedestrians.

These five simple steps will keep your automobile looking great without the need to use heavy compounds for corrective action.

Washing Equipment Advice for When Storing Your Car

So you would like to wash your car but you would like to do this ‘properly’. Finding that old sponge or chamois may not be the only things you need to replace. Here we look at finding that balance between what the professionals can afford and what equipment makes good practice to use at home. It’s their job to scare you into buying protection for your new purchase, but they’re not allowed to mislead you but still I decided to get a new car paint protection.

Car Wash Equipment:

1 x Pressure washer is strongly advisable but not essential, if you are keen about washing your car. These enable loose debris to be rinsed from the vehicle effectively under pressure before washing by hand. Machines can be either ‘cold’ pressurising water at the same temperature as the intake, or ‘hot’ where the water is heated in a boiler within the machine before being pressurised. Like washing your dishes at home a little warmth in the water not only makes the cleaning task much more effective it makes it a more pleasurable task. Hot washers can heat water to well over 100 degC, however we recommend that 45 degC is a good, safe temperature. This is warm enough to soften grime and remove debris safely, any warmer than this and there is the risk of damaging the paint finish on your pride and joy. You have been warned! In terms of price cold are relatively cheap at 100 – 500 and hot washers are usually 1000 – 2000.

2 x Lambs wool wash mitts. A typical yellow sponge can trap dirt and grit between the paintwork and sponge, scratching your paintwork in the process. We use and recommend using a Lambs wool wash mitt. These allow dirt particles to be drawn into the deep pile away from the painted surfaces being washed. Since this is not matted wool, the dirt easily rinses out of the mitt. The thick pile holds a tremendous amount of soapy water to lubricate and protect the paint from potential swirls. Used with any high lubricity car wash, a genuine Lambs wool wash mitt will provide a safe, gentle wash on any vehicle. A product we use on a daily basis. They can come in all different manner of materials from cotton and synthetic blends to lambs wool and beyond. We would recommend Lambs wool. We recommend using two mitts, one purely for the upper body and the second only for the really grimy/gritty jobs such as sills and lower sections of the vehicle.

2 x Good sized, deep buckets. One for wash suds and the second for rinse. Rinsing the wash mitt in the second ‘rinse’ bucket will remove any grit particles which have been drawn into the deep pile of your wash mitt, rather than simply dragging it all over your vehicle – try it and you will surprised at the difference in water colour of the two buckets at the end! Translucent buckets are best so that any dirt can be easily seen in the rinse bucket. Grit guards are for the real connoisseur where a specialist ‘mesh’ can be inserted in the bottom of both buckets to allow any grit to sink into a baffled section, thus preventing it being drawn back onto the wash mitt.

2 x Wheel brushes (1 x large, 1 x small). Most cars nowadays have alloy wheels making the car look great when clean. They can provide a slight nuisance when removing brake dust but it is not impossible. Two good quality wheel brushes in varied sizes will achieve good results, a large one for the main face and a smaller thinner type for between the spokes and back of the wheel. Do not be tempted to use your wash mitt on your wheels, unless you buy a dedicated one to only use on your wheels. My advised approach is to use four wheel brushes to achieve the best results as all of them have their uniqueness in size, shape and softness depending on the wheel type you are working with.

1 x Good quality drying towel. Drying your car after washing will leave it with a beautifully smear and spot free finish. Soft and ultra-deep pile are far more absorbent than a traditional leather, capable of absorbing many times their own weight in water. The ultra-soft fibers significantly reduce the risk of causing surface marring when a drying towel is drawn across painted surfaces, allowing any particles to be pulled away from the surface safely into the towel. A generous sized drying towel will allow you to dry most cars without needing to wring it out even once. These are machine washable for use safely time and time again.

Consumables

A good quality car wash ‘shampoo’ is the best thing for the paintwork. Do not be tempted to use household detergents as these will strip any protective coating from the paintwork and leave the bodywork unprotected. Most good car product brands will sell shampoo and conditioner; this is car shampoo with a simple rinse aid. These are safe to use on the bodywork, cleaning the surfaces gently without stripping wax or paint sealant.

Alloy wheel cleaner. If you regularly wash your vehicle a separate alloy wheel cleaner can be avoided altogether as any dirt on your wheels can be safely washed with car shampoo. However if your wheels have been left for a while between washes it may be time to invest in a good quality, dedicated wheel cleaner. These are better suited for removing baked on brake dust than car shampoo. The strongest wheel cleaners contain acid and whilst these do a great job at cleaning your wheels, as you can imagine are not going to be ‘good’ for your wheels in the long run. If you do decide to use a wheel cleaner look for a non-acid type which will be kinder to the surfaces of your wheels. Always read the label to ensure the product can be used with your wheel type.

Summary

All of the tools and products outlined above should be carried out by a car storage company on a daily basis. So many people simply don’t spend enough time or money investing the right tools for the job and believe a bucket, sponge and chamois are all they need. Whilst yes you can wash you car with these it will be hard work, not half as enjoyable and most importantly not ‘good’ for your car.

Know more a car storage company should carefully wash and dry every car which comes into the car storage facility. This should ensure that any contaminants have been removed from the vehicle during the wash process and also gives us a good opportunity to inspect the condition of the vehicle fully.
